Smartes Outsourcing

Bestimmte IT-Lösungen generieren Mehrwert, andere erfüllen eher eine unterstützende Funktion. Denken Sie beim Outsourcing daran.

Kosteneffizienz

Getting your IP address removed from an email blacklist

Gilt für All hosted services sending emailZielgruppe All customersZuletzt geprüft September 2026

Kort antwoord

Most blacklists are self-service: check whether your IP address is actually listed, fix the reason it got listed, then request removal through that blacklist's own process. Not every listing is worth acting on, see the note on UCEPROTECT below. If the listing is also the subject of an abuse report Worldstream received, you will hear from Worldstream directly and a tighter deadline applies.

Check whether you're actually listed

A blacklist checker looks up your IP address against a range of blacklists at once and tells you which, if any, list it. These tools are widely available online; use whichever checker you're comfortable with, there's no single one you need to use. If you're not listed anywhere, the delivery problem you're chasing likely has a different cause, such as SPF, DKIM, or DMARC configuration.

Fix the cause first

Delisting only sticks if the underlying problem is gone. Blacklists commonly list an IP for one of these reasons:

  • Spam sent from a compromised mail account or application on your server
  • Malware turning your server into part of a botnet that sends spam
  • An open relay or misconfigured mail server accepting mail from anyone
  • A high volume of legitimate mail that still triggers automated spam heuristics

Secure the account or application involved, remove the malicious process, and close the misconfiguration before you request delisting. See How to improve your SSH security if a compromised server is the likely cause.

Request delisting

Each blacklist runs its own delisting process, usually a form on the operator's own website where you submit your IP address and confirm the issue is resolved. Processing times vary by list and are outside Worldstream's control. A few general points that apply broadly:

  • Delist through the blacklist operator's own site, not through a third party
  • Some lists remove an IP automatically after a period with no further reports
  • A small number of lists charge a fee to delist, which several providers in the industry consider bad practice

A note on UCEPROTECT: UCEPROTECT is a blacklist operator whose delisting process requires a payment to remove a listing, a practice several providers in the industry consider unethical. In practice this has little effect on your mail delivery: mainstream mail providers rarely treat UCEPROTECT as an authority, so an unresolved UCEPROTECT listing usually has negligible impact. If you're not sure whether a delivery problem is actually caused by a UCEPROTECT listing or by something else, a blacklist checker will show you the other lists that matter more.

When a listing is also a Worldstream abuse report

A blacklisting and a Worldstream abuse report often share a root cause, usually spam from a compromised account or an open relay. Where Worldstream receives an abuse report about spam or a DNSBL listing on your IP address, its Anti Abuse team checks that the resource is on its network, maps it to your account, and forwards the report to your designated abuse contact. You are expected to respond within one business day.

Spam and DNSBL abuse also carry a 4 hour window once the abuse is verified: if it is not resolved in that time, Worldstream disables network connectivity to the resource. Fixing the underlying cause therefore does double duty, it clears the path to delisting and it resolves the abuse report. See How abuse notifications work for the full process, the deadlines for every abuse type, and how to contest a report you believe is wrong.

What to do next

Run a blacklist checker on the IP address you send mail from, and work the listings in order of how much they matter to your recipients. Fix the cause before you file a single delisting request. If you also have an open abuse notification about the same IP address, reply to it first, because that clock is the shorter one.
