Migrating from AWS S3 to Worldstream Object Storage
Kort antwoord
Worldstream Object Storage speaks the S3 API, so the same tools you already use against AWS S3, the AWS CLI, rclone, or an SDK like boto3, work here too. Point them at your Worldstream S3 endpoint instead of the AWS default, and migrate a bucket with a single sync command.
What "S3-compatible" actually means here
S3-compatible means the storage speaks the same request format and core operations as AWS S3, PUT, GET, DELETE, bucket and object listing, multipart upload. It does not mean it's an AWS account, or that every AWS-specific feature is guaranteed to exist. Worldstream's Object Storage supports the operations documented in the CLI and SDK reference; if a migration script relies on an AWS-only feature outside that list, check it works here before relying on it in production.
Migrating a bucket with rclone
The simplest path is running rclone with two remotes configured, one for AWS S3, one for Worldstream Object Storage, and syncing directly between them.
Configure both remotes
Set up an AWS remote (your existing credentials) and a Worldstream remote (your Worldstream Access Key, Secret Key, and S3 Endpoint from Storage & Backup → Object Storage in Portal), following the config format in the CLI and SDK reference.
Do a dry run first
Run the sync with --dry-run to see what would transfer before moving any real data, so you can catch naming or permission issues early.
Sync the bucket
rclone sync aws-s3:my-bucket worldstream:my-bucket --progressVerify, then cut over
Compare object counts and spot-check a few files, then repoint your application's S3 endpoint configuration at Worldstream once you're confident the transfer is complete.
Plan for the one-time egress cost
Moving data out of AWS S3 counts as egress traffic on the AWS side, which is typically the largest cost in a migration like this, not the storage itself. It's a one-time cost for the transfer, distinct from ongoing storage costs on either side. Factor this in before migrating a very large bucket, and consider migrating in batches if egress cost or transfer time is a concern.
