Soporte

Points of presence and cross-connects: how networks physically plug into each other

Se aplica a ColocationAudiencia Network engineer, technical evaluatorÚltima revisión September 2026

Respuesta rápida

A Point of Presence (PoP) is a physical location where an external network can directly connect into a provider's or facility's network, the actual place a connection is made, not just an abstract routing relationship. A cross-connect is the physical cable, fibre or copper, run inside a data centre that links your rack directly to another party's equipment in the same building. Because it's a direct physical link within one facility, it's typically far simpler and faster to set up than an equivalent connection routed over the public internet.

What a Point of Presence (PoP) is

A Point of Presence is a physical place, usually a specific data centre, where a network makes itself reachable to other networks. When a cloud provider, an internet exchange, or a carrier says it has a PoP in a given facility, it means their equipment is physically installed there, with a direct way for other parties in the same building to connect to it. That's a concrete, physical fact about a building, not a description of how routes are exchanged or which paths traffic takes once it's connected. Two networks can have a routing relationship with each other without sharing a PoP anywhere, in which case their traffic still has to cross other networks, including potentially the public internet, to reach each other.

What a cross-connect is

A cross-connect is the physical cable, fibre or copper, run inside a data centre connecting your rack directly to another party's equipment or network present in the same facility. It's installed and terminated by the facility, running between two points inside the same building, your cabinet and the other party's cabinet, meet-me room, or cage. Once it's in place, traffic between the two of you travels over that dedicated physical link rather than being routed out of the building and back in over the public internet.

That's what makes a cross-connect typically far simpler and faster to establish than an equivalent connection run outside the building: there's no public internet routing to configure, no transit provider in the middle, and no distance beyond the length of cable needed to physically reach the other party's equipment in the same facility.

Why this matters for colocation customers

Being in a facility with other networks physically present, and being able to order a cross-connect to reach them, is what makes several practical setups possible:

  • Connecting directly to a cloud provider that has a PoP in the same facility, so traffic to that cloud environment never has to touch the public internet.
  • Connecting to an internet exchange (IX) present in the building, to exchange traffic with the other networks that peer there.
  • Connecting to another business's equipment colocated in the same facility, for a private, direct link between the two of you.

In every case, the underlying reason is the same: a cross-connect is a direct physical link inside one building, so the traffic on it doesn't have to be routed over the shared, public internet to get from one party to the other. That tends to mean a more predictable, more direct path than the equivalent connection would have if it left the building.
