Why "lowest latency" is the wrong question

Every hosting provider wants to claim the lowest latency in Europe. It sounds simple. It isn’t.

Latency is not a fixed property of a data center. It’s the result of a chain: your player’s ISP, the route across networks, peering agreements, and finally the server itself. A data center in Frankfurt might give a Berlin player 5ms and a Lisbon player 40ms. Change the player’s ISP and both numbers shift again.

So when someone asks “which host has the lowest latency,” the honest answer is: it depends on where your players are, which routes their ISPs use, and how well the provider peers with those networks. Nobody can promise a single lowest number that holds for every player, every day.

What actually drives latency for game servers

A few factors matter more than the marketing:

  • Physical distance. Still the baseline. Light in fiber moves at roughly two-thirds the speed of light in a vacuum. More distance means more minimum latency, full stop.
  • Route quality. Two data centers at the same distance can give very different pings if one has a messy route through three extra networks and the other peers directly with the player’s ISP.
  • Peering and network size. A larger backbone network (measured in Tbit/s capacity) doesn’t automatically mean lower latency for you. What matters is whether that network peers well with the specific ISPs your community uses.
  • Jitter, not just average ping. A server with 20ms average but wild swings between 10 and 60ms will feel worse to gamers than a steady 30ms. Ask about jitter, not just average latency.
  • Congestion at peak hours. Ping tests done at 3am mean little if your players are online at 8pm. Test during real peak load.

What to verify before you commit

1. Run your own traceroute and ping tests from the actual regions your player base is concentrated in, not just from your own office.

2. Ask for a trial period or test IP so you can measure real performance before signing anything.

3. Check peak-hour performance, not just off-peak numbers. Congestion tells you more than a quiet 3am ping.

4. Ask about jitter and packet loss, not just average latency. Consistency matters for real-time gameplay.

5. Confirm the actual data center location, not just the country. “Netherlands” can mean very different routes depending on the city and the exchange point used.

6. Ask how DDoS mitigation affects latency. Some protection systems add noticeable delay when scrubbing traffic; ask for real numbers, not just “protected.”

7. Check the support model. When a game server has a network issue at 2am on a Saturday, how fast can you actually get a human on the line?

Beyond latency: what else breaks a game server

Latency gets the attention, but it’s not the only thing that ruins a launch weekend or a competitive match.

DDoS attacks are common against game servers, competitive titles especially. Check what protection is included by default versus what costs extra, and at what threshold it kicks in.

Billing surprises are another quiet killer. Traffic spikes, extra IPs, or emergency scaling can turn into unexpected invoice lines if a provider’s pricing isn’t fixed and transparent upfront.

And when something breaks, response time matters more than any spec sheet. A 24/7 team that answers in minutes, not hours, is worth more during an incident than a slightly shorter ping.

Don’t chase a single number. Build a short list of providers with data centers reasonably close to your player base, then test each one directly: real traceroutes, real peak-hour pings, a real trial if offered.
