How to configure IPv6 on Windows Server
Quick answer
Add the IPv6 address in Network Adapter Properties under Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), alongside your existing IPv4 configuration. Enter the address, prefix length and gateway exactly as supplied for your server.
Configure the address, prefix length and gateway exactly as supplied for your server. If you do not have those details to hand, check the server's details in Portal or open a support ticket.
The steps below use 2001:db8:0:3d1::/64 as an example. That prefix is reserved for documentation, so it will never be your real subnet. Replace the address, gateway and DNS values with your own.
Configure the IPv6 address
Open Network Adapters
Press Win + R, type ncpa.cpl, and press Enter.
Open the network adapter properties
Right-click your network adapter and select Properties.
Select the IPv6 protocol
Select Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and click Properties.
Enter a static IPv6 address
Select Use the following IPv6 address and enter the following, adjusted for your own subnet:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| IP address | 2001:db8:0:3d1::2 |
| Subnet prefix length | 64 |
| Default gateway | 2001:db8:0:3d1::1 |
| Preferred DNS | your resolver of choice, see Worldstream DNS servers |
| Alternate DNS | a second resolver of choice |
Optionally tick Validate settings upon exit so Windows checks the configuration for you.
Apply the configuration
Click OK and close the remaining configuration windows.
Validate the configuration
Run a validation command in Command Prompt, such as ping against an external IPv6 address, to confirm the new configuration is working correctly.
